Performance Workshop




This is a workshop for anyone interested in exploring music, story and tradition in a challenging, joyous, and soulful environment. Participants learn the basics of several American music and performance forms, including blues, step, and spoken word, and learn how to employ these as a form of personal expression. The workshop culminates in a short piece using what we’ve learned in a music and movement piece inspired by our personal and community traditions.

Unique writing & Performance Workshops


The Bengson’ workshops are challenging, moving events for any community. They are always tailored to the needs and desires of the group and the day. The Bengsons work to challenge, inspire, tickle, and nurture participants of all ages and levels.

Finding the Story:

Writing Workshop




Based on the belief that everyone has a story to tell, the Bengsons explore personal history, ancestry and mythology. This workshop delves into the innumerable ways different cultures and individuals have told their own stories and in doing so have changed their lives, communities and, in some cases, the world.   


This is an interactive, soulful discussion and creation of activist art. Participants will collectively interpret and explore historical examples of activist art from hip-hop and spoken word to the anti-Apartheid freedom theater of South Africa, from Vaudeville to 12-bar blues; examine stories and instruments from all over the world; and will draw a short performance or song from a personal story.
